What happens when you add the good old power of surprise

Last weekend, a trip to a small museum for a chamber orchestra performance turned into an unforgettable evening for me and my soon to be husband.

And it was all thanks to the power of surprise.

It was a fancy part of town, and the place was cozy, with about 25 people there to enjoy the music. The main show was a cellist who played beautifully, picking pieces from different composers that kept everyone hooked.

But here's where it got really interesting. After the third piece, just before a short break, the cellist threw in a surprise. He played a piece that wasn't listed for the evening, sparking excitement among everyone.

Right before we were about to take a break after the third piece, the cellist looked at all of us and said,

"We're going to take a short break soon, but first, I've got something special for you that's not listed for tonight..."

Everyone in the room got super excited.

"Oooooh," someone whispered quietly, "Something special that's not even on the list! Aren't we lucky?"

Then, the cellist played that surprise piece and took a short break.

Later on, he came back and told us:

"I probably shouldn't, but I'm going to do it anyway... This next piece is brand new. I asked another artist to create it. You're the first in the whole world to hear it. Enjoy..."

We all felt a wave of excitement.

We're the first to hear this? Wow, that's amazing!

And just when we thought it was over, after the last scheduled piece, he said,

"One last thing, I promise! Here's one more piece from a musician I met at the biggest cellist meet-up in the world at the USC last year."

And with that, he gave us another surprise!

This wasn't just a one-time thing; he did it again and again, each time revealing pieces nobody had heard before. Some were from other artists, some were exclusive previews, and one was even from an Italian musician he met at a big event.

These surprises made the night feel special, like we were part of something unique.

Driving home, I couldn't help but think about how this experience was more than just enjoying great music. It was a brilliant example of how to make people feel special and lucky, something that's incredibly powerful for personal branding too.

When you're building your brand, especially online, adding elements of surprise can make a huge difference. Here's how:

  1. Surprise in Your Content:

Imagine writing an article or making a video that not only shares useful info but also includes unexpected bonuses for your audience. It could be a free guide, a discount code, or a hidden tip that they wouldn't find anywhere else. This makes your audience more engaged and excited to see what you'll share next.

  2. Surprise with Your Products:

If you're selling something, surprise your customers with something extra they weren't expecting. It could be an additional small product, access to an exclusive webinar, or extra support. This extra step can make your customers feel really appreciated and more likely to talk about your brand to others.

  3. Surprise in Your Emails:

Even your regular emails can be a source of surprises. Instead of just sending out the same type of content, throw in a surprise now and then. It could be a sneak peek at new content, a special offer, or a personal story that shares insights into your journey. This not only keeps your audience engaged but also helps build a deeper connection with them.

These surprises don't just make your audience happy in the moment; they build a sense of loyalty and trust over time.

Just like the cellist made an ordinary evening into something memorable, you can make your brand stand out by going the extra mile to surprise your audience.

This is what turns casual followers into loyal fans who are excited to see what you'll do next. In a world where everyone is fighting for attention, making your brand genuinely engaging and a little unpredictable can be your secret ally.
